I received a BA from Cambridge (French and German) in 1988, followed by a PhD from Princeton (Comparative Literature) in 1997. I’ve been teaching at Stanford since 1996, and now hold the Andrew B. Hammond chair in French Language, Literature, and Civilization.
At Stanford, I’ve been fortunate enough to receive the Walter J. Gores Award for Teaching Excellence (1999) and the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2001); more recently, I was appointed the Eleanor Loring Ritch University Fellow in Undergraduate Education (2024-29).
Along with R. Lanier Anderson, I co-direct the Philosophy and Literature Initiative at Stanford, which involves undergraduate major tracks, a PhD minor, and a lecture / workshop series, as well as an annual grad student conference in conjunction with the department of Comparative Thought and Literature at Johns Hopkins.
And as you can see from the photo, I occasionally speak French.
